It has a unique property of smoothly turning the gear. However the gear is unable to turn the worm. This is because the angle on the worm is very shallow and whenever the gear attempts to rotate it, the friction causes no movement.

Worm gears are capable of reducing the rotation speed of the motor to achieve a higher torque. It is not a reversible gear. The motion takes place only in one direction. Its important to mention that reducing the speed is possible but increasing the drive isn’t but power to the drive can be increased. Worm gears contain teeth that complement the shafts present on the wheel. As the gear rotates the shafts also moves by one tooth. The speed is reduced proportionally to the number of teeth a gear has. For example for a 10 teeth gear the speed will be reduced by the factor of 10. The rotation axis has a 90 degree angle. These gears are quite compact and efficient in operation. They are used in big and small motor which requires power efficiency.
